GEORGE FRANCIS ZAMMUTO, 84 ROCKFORD - Lifelong Rockford resident, George Francis Zammuto, 84, passed away November 19, 2013, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on July 24, 1929, to Joe and Lena (Schiro) Zammuto. He graduated from Rockford West High School. After attending the University of Illinois, he served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954, at the Coronado Naval Base. His tour of duty took him to the South Pacific Islands where he was stationed aboard the USS Pine Island. He married Teresa Buscemi September 6, 1953, in Chicago, IL. George was employed by Reliable Distributors and Dr. Pepper Bottling Company for several years. In 1965, he joined Allstate Insurance Company as an agent and worked there until retirement. George later served as a clerk in the office of the Winnebago County Circuit Court where he enjoyed working with old friends and meeting new people. George was a member of St. Anthony Church, Holy Name Society, Lombardi Club, and numerous other organizations. A warmhearted, likeable family man, George was well respected by all who knew him. He was a talented artist having been recognized for his work at local art shows. An excellent cook, he loved being in the kitchen with his wife, and enjoyed long walks along the Sinnissippi Bike Path. He was an avid sports fan, following the Bears and White Sox, and especially loved watching football games with his family. Survivors include his devoted wife of 60 years, Teresa; children, Joseph, Annette, Salvatore (Lora) and Beatrice (Jeff) Miller; grandchildren, George Miller and Gabriella and Gianna Zammuto; sister, Susan Gaziano; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Lena Zammuto; brother, Joseph Zammuto; and Sister Guiseppe Zammuto O.P. The family expresses special thanks to the staff of 4 West OSF Hospital, OSF Hospice, Presence Saint Anne Center and Dr. Steven J. Disanti. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013, in St. Anthony Church, with Franciscan Friars officiating. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2013, in Gasparini & Oliveri Funeral Home. Friends may call again Saturday morning at the church from 9 a.m. until service time.
