GORDON D. LUCAS, M.D., 82 ROCKFORD - Gordon D. Lucas, M.D., 82, passed away on May 29, 2014. Born in Rockford on March 18, 1932 to James Jay and Nella (Povilaitis) Lucas. He graduated from Rockford East in 1949, received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1953 from UW-Madison, his Doctor of Medicine from University of Illinois-Chicago in 1958. He had his two years Internal Medicine residency plus two years of U.S. Public Health Fellowship in Oncology at Presbyterian-St. Lukes Hospital (now Rush) in Chicago. He had a private practice in Oncology in Rockford and taught at U of I College of Medicine, Rockford. He was a captain in the Air Force and served for three years as a flight surgeon. He was a certified scuba diver, licensed private pilot, and had a motorcycle drivers license. His passion was learning. He had an extensive library on a myriad of subjects from science to the humanities; all read. He also was a member of the Rockford Amateur Astronomers and enjoyed participating while he was able. In 1983 he married Galey Day and during their 21 years together they traveled extensively. A couple of the places he found most interesting were Turkey and Israel. Survived by his daughters, Ann Lynn Stowe, Midlothian, VA and Mary (David) Westerbeck, Indianapolis, IN; sons, James Lucas, Midlothian, VA and Michael Lucas, Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Sean and Ian Stowe, Zack and Sara Westerbeck, Abigail and Grace Lucas; sister, Dona (Stoddard) Wisner; sister-in-law, Nancy (Pat) Mattison; brother-in-law, Frank (Margy) Shappert; nephews, Thomas Wisner and Daniel (Sally) Wisner; several cousins; dear friends, Jan Winterroth and LaVern (Phyllis) Eklund; and mother of his children, Nancy Johnson. Predeceased by his wife, Galey; parents and nephew, David Wisner. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at P.A. Peterson for their gentle, compassionate care. A private graveside service will be held.
