HELEN 'MICKEY' MAXINE MCDANIEL JONES 1/21/1920 TO 1/31/2014 BELVIDERE - Born in Waterloo, IA, her family moved to Rockford in 1929. Attended Muldoon Catholic HS until starting her first job as a waitress at Hassinger's on State. Employed at the National Youth Administration, Roper Stove, and National Lock Company in her early years. Married May 31, 1939, to Wilbur "Tuffy" D. Jones of Rockford, IL. Lived in Loves Park until 1970, when they moved to rural Boone County. A 1956 graduate Rockford School of Beauty Culture. She worked in a salon, then opened a shop in her home that she maintained until the mid 1980's. Her shop became a local gossip center, like a scene right out of the movie Steel Magnolias. Helen was outgoing and social and never too busy to stop what she was doing for a visit. Known for her "fiery" personality, she always said what was on her mind. She kept an immaculate house that was warm and welcoming, and from which no one ever left hungry. Helen was a talented cook and skilled in upholstery and ceramics. She was a member of the LLL Club and the Eastern Star, enjoyed family events, picnics, card games, shopping, and eating out. Married for 63 years, Helen and Wilbur together built the better part of 3 homes, worked, cared for two children and raised chickens. They were well known by family and friends for their hospitality, often hosting social gatherings at their country home. Predeceased by husband, Wilbur D. Jones; parents, Jack and Lillian (White) McDaniel; siblings, Velma Russell, Lavonne Rylatt, Damon McDaniel, Patrick McDaniel. Survivors include children, Gary D. (Mary Lee) Jones of Belvidere, Robert J. (Rachel) Jones of Mary Esther, FL; grandchildren, Jodie Jones, Caledonia, Jenny (Ken) Hall, LaGrange, Jackie Jones, Belvidere, Garrett Jones, Belvidere, Anthony (Karyn) Jones, San Diego, CA; great- grandchildren, Isabelle, Bekim, Brendan and Tristan; special nieces and nephew, Lee LaLiberte, Lou Peterson and Jeff Bronson. Services will follow a 10 a.m. visitation on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at the Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 9800 Rt. 76, Belvidere. A luncheon will follow at the VFW, 1300 W Lincoln Ave, Belvidere. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eastern Star of Roscoe, IL, Chapter #641, OES, 10534 Main St., Roscoe, IL 61073.
