Obituary Condolences

HUGH DAVID HAMMERSLAG SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. - Hugh David Hammerslag of Sun City West passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. Hugh was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Hugo B. and Helen L. (Heinrich) Hammerslag. He attended Grand Valley Community College, earned a bachelor's degree and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan in 1954. He joined Seidman & Seidman, as a CPA, soon becoming their youngest partner. As partner he moved his family to Illinois enjoying a productive career managing the Rockford, Ill., office. Hugh was an active supporter of higher education; he served on the Board of Trustees for Rock Valley Community College, Governors Committee for Higher Education, Illinois State Community College Board, and The Illinois Community College Trustee Association. Hugh was also actively involved in professional and civic organizations. He was president of the National Association of Accountants (6161 Chapter), served on the Ken Rock Community Board, was president of Rotary, chair of the Rockford Public Safety Building Governing Board, and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Hugh is survived by his wife of 60 years, Adellé; brother, Robert (Carole) of the Philippines; children, Susan L. "Sue" (David) Christensen of South Beloit, Ill., Sally H. (Mitchell) Mode of Rhinelander, Wis., David H. (Kirstin Johnson) of Chandler, and James R. of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Ruth Christensen, Joseph Christensen, Katherine "Katie" Christensen, Benjamin (Lindsey) Hammerslag, Emily Hammerslag, Sarah Hammerslag and Sophia Hammerslag. Hugh is predeceased by his parents; brother, Charles Fredrick (Shelly) Hammerslag; and sister, Ruth (Alexander) Grant. The family would like to thank Rosalie Murch for the care and support she provided to Hugh and the family. In lieu of flowers, donations received will be used to fund educational scholarships in Hugh's name.
