JAMES D. HALTER, 80 ROCKFORD - James D. Halter, 80, Rockford, passed away June 12, 2013, at Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. He was born April 17, 1933, in Mission, SD to Ernest Halter and Viola Schutt Mele. He graduated from Tuly High School in Chicago in 1951, and served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 as a Track Vehicle Mechanic in Strauburg Germany as part of the Tank Co. 6th Armored Calvary. James married Jean Roop on October 13, 1956, until her passing in September 1971. He later married Jeanette Scott on May 17, 1983, and they had been together for the last 30 years. He was involved with Tabala Shriners, LLL Club, Harmony Club, SMSF Club and was a member of Moose Club - Belvidere, IL. James is survived by his wife, Jeanette Halter, Rockford; daughter, Linda Johnson, Loves Park; grandchildren, Matthew Lee of Rockford and Kristina Marie (Kevin) Swinbank of Loves Park; great-grandson, Noah of Rockton; sister, Jean Brainard of Rockford; brother, Larry (Tammy) Halter of Park Falls, WI; niece, Virginia Brown and nephew, Scott (Val) Brainard, both of Belvidere. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jean; parents, Ernest and Viola; and son, Steven Richardson. Cremation rites have been accorded under the direction of Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
