JERRY MELVIN AWE, 73 Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather GENOA - Jerry Melvin Awe, 73, of Genoa, IL, died Wednesday October 2, 2013, at Northwoods Care Centre in Belvidere. He was surrounded daily by his loving family. Born on May 11, 1940, in Sycamore, IL, the son of Melvin and Vivian (Smith) Awe. He married Judith Mae Gustafson on August 12, 1961, in Esmond, IL. He retired from Ideal Industries, Inc. in Sycamore in 2002, allowing more time for his family, extensive traveling, and woodworking. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Kirkland and had served as council member. Other services include six years in the United States Marine Corps where he was active for four years and in the reserves for two years. He was a Republican Committeeman, Cub Master and Scout Master. He was involved in the schools as a Hiawatha athletic booster club member, a PTA officer and a founder and originator of KAYAK - Kirkland Area Youth Advisory Kommittee. He also enjoyed teaching gun safety classes and was Santa Clause for the Kirkland Lion's Club for many years. He is survived by his wife, Judith Awe, Genoa, of 52 years; two daughters, Ginger (Brad) Alms of Belvidere, Sheila (Britt) Stender of St. Charles, MO; one son, Benjamin (Yvonne) Awe of Huntington Beach, CA; seven grandchildren, Michelle Gomez, Brittney (Hector) Torres, Christopher Awe, Rianne (Joe) Bardoner, Clark Alms, Tyler and Trevor Stender; one great-grandchild, Jacob Torres; and one sister, Susan Swank. He will be missed by aunts, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Benjamin Awe. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 7, in The First Lutheran Church of Kirkland, 510 West South Street, Kirkland, IL, with the Reverend Carl L.M. Rasmussen officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday October 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Quiram Kirkland Chapel, 309 South Fifth St., Kirkland, IL. Burial in Maple Cemetery in Kirkland, IL.
