JOHN CRAIG, 66 SPRINGFIELD - John Craig, 66, of Springfield, passed away at 5:43 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. John was born December 28, 1946, in Belvidere, Illinois, the son of John George and Ruth E. Coan Craig. He married Mary L. Loftus on February 16, 1974, in Springfield. John received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University in 1969, and his Ph.D from Northwestern University in 1984. He was a certified education administrator and teacher for the Rockford Public Schools from 1969-1971, and a research consultant for the State Board of Education from 1971-2007, and the American Institutes for Research from 2007-2013. Additionally, he was on the Board of Directors and Vice President for the Illinois Federation of Teachers from 1987-1993; President of the Central Illinois Area Council from 1983-1991 and the Illinois Federation of State Office Educators from 1992-1996; Consultant for National Educational Standards; National Geographic Standards and Assessment, history steering committee; National Assessment Education Progress 2003; member of the design team of the Illinois Goal Assessment Program and designer of the Illinois Prairie State Achievement Test from 1996-1999; Editor of Alternate Assessment in Social Sciences and Geography; contributor to articles of professional journals; Producer and Broadcaster, Station WSSR (now WUIS) Radio in Springfield from 1976-1987; leader of Boy Scouts of America in Springfield from 1987-2003; Member of the National Council of Social Studies; and served on the Board of Directors for both the Illinois Council Social Studies from 2001-2007 and Illinois State Historical Society from 2005-2012. In his spare time, he enjoyed model railroads and woodworking. John was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Joe Loftus. He is survived by his parents, Ruth and John Craig of Belvidere, IL; two sons, David (wife, Rebecca Rotello) Craig of Albuquerque, NM and Jesse Lindsey Craig of Springfield; one grandchild, John Stephen Craig of New Mexico; one sister, Suzanne (husband, Larry) Wallen of Hinesville, GA; in-laws, Michael (wife, Judy) Loftus of Lisle, IL, Eileen Loftus of Sayulita, Mexico, and Janice Loftus of Springfield; and three cousins, Michael (wife, Jill) Craig, Carol (husband, Kevin) Crageen, and Tammy (husband, Joe) Hendricks, all of Belvidere. Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the time of the funeral ceremony at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, with Rev. Bob Swickard officiating. Graveside Ceremony at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Belvidere Cemetery in Belvidere, IL, with Rev. Jim Crone officiating.
