JOHN E. HURD ROCKFORD - John E. Hurd died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, after an active and fulfilling life. Son of Earl and Ivy (Perrett) Hurd, John was born April 7, 1945, in Rockford. He eloped with his loving partner, Joan Markunas in 1978, and together they raised their daughter Emily, John's greatest joy. John will be remembered by all who knew him as a true one-of-a-kind man, never reluctant to be his authentic self. He was virtuous, hard-working, intelligent, and kind. He loved woodworking, fishing, good times with family and friends, and especially working in his private woods where he found his love of nature. John gave generously of his talents and time to all in need and was enormously proud to participate in the music career of his daughter. John graduated from Auburn High School, the University of Wisconsin Madison, and University of Chicago. He had a full career at Ingersoll Milling Machine Co., and went on to found Reallco with former colleagues and good friends. He was widely respected for his engineering and creative accomplishments. John is survived by wife, Joan; daughter, Emily; siblings, Carole Hurd, David Hurd (Cathy), Diane Risley (David), Pam Griswold (Bill), and Pat Withers (Mike); brothers- and sisters-in-law, Jean Chanson (Bob), Albert Markunas (Sue), and Ruthanne Markunas (Jim McEachran); numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews; and Hank, his special dog friend.
