JOHN T. SCHOU, 78 CHERRY VALLEY - John T. Schou, 78, of Cherry Valley (formerly of Rockford), died at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in Lincolnshire Place. He was born Sept. 20, 1935, in Dwight, Ill., the son of Niels and Hilda (Davidsen) Schou. He married Shirley E. Benson on Aug. 14, 1960, in Varna, Ill. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Augustana College (Ill.) and a Master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1960. John was a teacher at Marshalltown High School, Marshalltown, Iowa, and Guilford High School. Working at Rock Valley College for 30 years, he was a professor of history and political science from 1966-78; the Coordinator of Audio Visual Services from 1978-83; and the Director of Community and Continuing Education from 1983-95. He also taught speed reading for many years. John served on the Winnebago County Board representing District 14 for 16 years, and was the Winnebago County Clerk for six years. He was a member of Alpine Lutheran Church, where he participated in ALPS and Marriage Encounters, and was the past president of the church council. John was past president of the Kiwanis Club of Rockford, and a board member for Grand View College, Northern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, and Midway Village. He served a term as Rock Valley College Faculty President, and was a member of the American Society of Training Directors, Zone IV Clerks and Recorders, United Way Rock River Valley, and Learning Resources Network. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Karen (John) Arce of Loves Park and Brian (Holly) Schou of Bettendorf, Iowa; grandsons, Ryan and Matthew Arce, Cooper and Jackson Schou; brother, Robert (Audrey) Schou of Streator, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Jean Ann and Meletta Schou both of Dwight, Ill.; brother-in-law, Richard (Lois) Benson of Batavia, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Niels, Richard, and Paul Schou; and sister, Marie McNamara. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2013, in Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave., with Rev. Woody Knutson officiating. A memorial visitation is offered from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, also at the church. Memorials may be made to Alpine Lutheran Church or Kiwanis Charities of Rockford, P.O.
