Obituary Condolences

LEROY E. 'LEE' KARLBERG, 90 ROCKFORD - LeRoy E. "Lee" Karlberg, 90, of Rockford, passed away on August 2, 2014, in PA Peterson Center for Health. He was born March 11, 1924, in Rockford; the son of Ernest and Hilma (Karlson) Karlberg. Lee was a 1942 graduate of East High School and graduated from University of Minnesota. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On Nov. 19, 1949, he married Harriett "Jane" Carlson in Rockford. He was employed with the Barber-Colman Company, from where he retired in 1985. Lee loved playing golf, traveling, spending time with family and friends and good-natured teasing. He was proud of his strong faith and his Swedish heritage. Lee was a member at Alpine Lutheran Church for 58 years. Lee was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He also viewed the Peterson Meadows staff and residents as his extended family. Lee was an honorable and compassionate gentleman who will be remembered for his sincerity along with his genuine hugs and handshakes. He is survived by his wife, Jane of 64 years; daughters, Bonnie (Rick) Barton of Rockford and Debra (Dirk) Crews of Madison, Wis.; brother, Rev. Leonard (Marilyn) Karlberg of Tucson, Ariz.; granddaughters, Nicole (Corey) Mayfield, Lydia (Alex) Nieuwenhuis, and Erica (Levi) Crews-Riggs; great-granddaughter, Hailey Mayfield. Predeceased by his parents. The family would like to thank the staff at VNA Hospice and especially, James and Sarah for their compassionate care. The staff at PA Peterson/The Villas are also deeply appreciated for their skill and tender care. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave. in Rockford with Pastor Daniel Wynard officiating. Memorial visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to VNA Hospice, 4223 E. State St. Rockford or Alpine Lutheran Church.
