ROLAND E. CARLSON, 96 ROCKFORD - Roland E. Carlson, 96, of Rockford, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, in Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. Born Dec. 27, 1916, in Rockford, the son of Simon J. and Hulda (Lilja) Carlson and stepmother, Ellen Engstrom. Graduate of Rockford Central High School class of 1934. He married Virginia A. Johnson June 22, 1940, in Rockford. Roland became a journeyman plumber in 1939 and a master plumber in 1940. He was the owner and president of S. J. Carlson and Son, Inc. for 41 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First Evangelical Covenant Church, where he organized the Merri-Weds Sunday School class and worked with high school youth. He also participated in Habitat for Humanity into his 90s, and did mechanicals for many homes. Roland was a member of the Rockford Rotary Club; past president of the National Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors and the Illinois Plumbing Contractors Assoc.; chairman of the National Apprenticeship Committee; and lifetime member of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army of Rockford. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Virginia; children, Sherri (Lawrence) Wick of Chicago, Joel (Barbara) Carlson of Orlando, Fla., and Rogene Rockwell of Rockford; grandchildren, Anders (Vineetha Reddy) Wick, Annika (Brian) Joy, Brian (Jessica) Carlson, Julie (James) Frice, Peter (Becky) Rockwell, and Nikole Rockwell; great-grandchildren, Arun and Anya Wick, Soren, Haakon, and Gunnar Joy, Drew Frice, Makenna Carlson, and Judah Rockwell. Special thanks to the caregivers at Fairhaven and special friend, Dawn Butler. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, in First Evangelical Covenant Church, 316 Wood Rd., with Pastor Wesley Engstrom and Pastor David Ahrens officiating. Private family burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rockford Rescue Mission, 715 W.
