SUSAN ROSS ARMSTRONG, 87 ROCHELLE - Susan Ross Armstrong, 87, died peacefully Friday, June 20, 2014, at home, surrounded by her family. Susan was born July 3, 1926, in Moline, Illinois, to Pearl and Elwood Ross. She graduated from Moline High School, attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and married Francis Patrick Armstrong in 1946. She is preceded in death by her husband, Pat, and her parents. She is survived by her brother, James Patrick (Nancy) Ross; her children, Elizabeth (Gary) Hoyson of Pittsburgh, Catherine Gittleson of Rochelle, Peter Armstrong of Rochelle, and Anne (Dusty) Ankney; grandchildren, Jeff (Stacey) Feltes, Ross (April) Gittleson, Catie (Brandon) Jones, Susan (Aidan) Kitching, Laura Hoyson, Claire Ankney, Grace Ankney, Lydia Ankney, and Nora Ankney; great-grandchildren, Dani, Taylor, Ariel, Lane, Mack, Calvin, Patrick, and Merryn. Susan lead a very active life in community service, including Hospital Auxiliary, League of Women Voters, Woman's Club, PEO, Migrant Council, past member of District 231 School Board, David Crawford Foundation, and Friends of the Library. She was also a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and participated in choir, circle, Bible study, and OK Club. Her long career as a teacher and library clerk started with teaching at the Todd School for Boys in Woodstock, IL, St. Patrick's Catholic School, and substitute teaching at many area elementary schools. She then worked at the library at May School, followed by many years at Flagg Township Library. Susan enjoyed the past 30 summers at her cottage at Lake Kegonsa in Stoughton, WI, the birthplace of her mother and where Susan met her husband. She was an avid reader and knitter, and enjoyed antiquing and attending auctions. Funeral service at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1415 10th Avenue, Rochelle, with Pastor David Adermann officiating. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 23, at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th Street, Rochelle. Burial will be at Trinity Memory Gardens following the service, with a luncheon back at the church.
