HERBERT H. STENGER, 89 ROCKFORD - Herbert H. Stenger, 89, of Rockford passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, at Wesley Willows Nursing Home. He was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Rockford, the fifth son of Charles and Eva (Kuntzelman) Stenger. He married L. Verrell Moring on Feb. 8, 1947, and devoted 65 loving years with her until her death Feb. 18, 2012. Herb is survived by four children, Ronald (Janet) Jones, Michael (Marie) Stenger, Sandra (Phil) Ross and Charles (Barb) Stenger; and grandchildren, Michelle Schiller, Melissa Stenger, Matthew Stenger, William Ross, Josh Ross, Becky Quirk, Carrie Casgoigne, Jason Jones and Jennifer Jones; and several great- grandchildren. A devoted father, Herb was always active in all the children's activities. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and participate in any outdoor activities. He was a master craftsman. No task could not be conquered. Herb was a charter member of Kepota Sportman Club and a partner in Thunder Rock Trap and Skeet in Rockton, as well as a lifetime member of the Moose Club. A proud Marine veteran from World War II, Herb served in the South Pacific during WWII, although he talked very little about his service. After returning to civilian life, he was active in the Marine Corp Color Guard. After Herb retired from pattern making, he and Verrell loved to travel, including Europe and cruises to Alaska. They also enjoyed day trips and the theatre. They were actively involved with several senior groups, including Golden Agers and AMCORE Bank. Special thanks to the staff at Wesley Willows who gave so much support to both Herb and Verrell during their stay there and the staff of VNA Hospice, especially Julie. Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park; the Rev. Bruce Main will officiate. Inurnment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to Wesley Willows Good Samaritan Fund.
