Edward C. Flocke
CUSTER | Edward C. Flocke, 100, died Friday, December 28, 2012 at the Ft. Meade VA Medical Center.
He was born October 15, 1912 in Belle Fourche SD to Carl and Mathilda Flocke. He grew up in Belle Fourche and surrounding area and graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1931. In September 1931, he started to work with the SD Highway Dept. as rodman on a survey crew and later promoted to instrument man working in Western SD until he was drafted into military service on March 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater in an anti-aircraft unit as 1st Lieutenant from 1943 – 1946.
Upon return to the United States he was rehired by the Department of Transportation and assigned to the Belle Fourche residency as instrument man and later promoted to resident engineer. In 1959 he was transferred to Pierre, SD, as locations engineer in charge of surveys. While there he met Ruby Corrington and was married on August 22, 1963.
In 1967 Ed and Ruby became the foster parents of Ruby's great-niece and nephews. He continued working out of Pierre until June 1972 and was transferred to Custer, SD, as resident engineer until retirement in October 1977. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge, life member of the American Legion and VFW and also a retired member of the Professional Engineers of SD.
Edward was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister and his wife in 1993.
Survivors include foster children, Glenn Kuehner, Cedar Rapids IA, Clarence and Olivia Kuehner, Rapid City SD, Debra Phyle, Mitchell SD, son John Tyler, Texas and grandchildren Destiny Phyle, Clarence, Carl and Callie Kuehner, Joni and Todd Tyler.
Gravesite services and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Rapid City Club for Boys.
