Morris 'Ferg' Ferguson

CUSTER | Morris Dee "Ferg" Ferguson, 94, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Custer Regional Senior Care.

Ferg was born July 17, 1918, in Alvord, TX, to John and Jewel (Howard) Ferguson.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946 and fought with the combat infantry in Europe during World War II, receiving a Bronze Star for valor.

Ferg began his career with the U.S. Forest Service in 1947, and worked many years on the Black Hills National Forest, retiring in 1976.

He married Virginia Harris in 1951, and together they raised three children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and storytelling. No one laughed at his jokes more than he.

Ferg is survived by his wife, Virginia of Custer; son, Gary (Anne Marie) of Oakland, CA; daughters, Sharon (Dean) Kurtz and Wanda (Rick) Wheeler, all of Custer; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Huebner of Palestine, TX.

Graveside memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
