Harold "Hal" Eugene Klein
Age 87, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in Pasadena, CA of congestive heart failure. He was born on September 17, 1926 in Greeley, CO. Hal is the third child of Chester Leroy Klein and Alice Glazier Klein. He married Carolyn Sarah Robinson, June 14, 1952. She preceded him in death in 2005. He is survived by his brother Chester Leroy Klein, Jr. and four children Karen Elizabeth Klein Holder (Bob), Harold "Gene" Eugene Klein, Jr. (Nancy), Aleta Jeanne Klein Hellwig (Steve), Eric William Klein (Anne). He also leaves behind six grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
Hal's growing up years were spent on the mission field of Burma (Myanmar) with his parents among the Karen people in Moulmein, Shwegyin, Toungoo. He was sent back to the United States to live and attend high school at the Fannie Doane Home and School for Missionary Children on the campus of Dennison University, Granville, Ohio. Hal graduated from UC Berkeley and UCLA with a BA and Master's Degree education. He went on to teach U.S. and World History, political science and debate at the high school level for 40 years, the majority of those years in San Bernardino School District. Hal was a long time resident of Redlands and member of the First Presbyterian Church. He loved sports, especially baseball. He was an avid reader and advocate of education and learning. He wrote books about his parents and Burma. Hal was a champion of the downtrodden. He helped organize relief efforts for Karen and Vietnamese refugees and immigrants. Hal was a man who left a lasting impression on all who met him.
A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, 2:00pm, at First Presbyterian Church, 100 Cajon St., Redlands, CA. Hal will be laid to rest in private interment service for the family at Montecito Memorial Park & Mortuary Cemetery, Loma Linda, CA.
