Alice Walters Mumford, 71, of Durham, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, of breast cancer.

Alice was born Oct. 10, 1942 in Greenville. She was the daughter of the late Stephen Franklin Walters Sr. and Nell Merritt Walters. Alice graduated from Rose High School, received a B.A. in Education from East Carolina College and later received a Master of Arts degree in Education from East Carolina University.
Alice settled in Durham with her family in 1976. She retired from the Durham County Schools after teaching and working as a Guidance Counselor.
Alice loved flowers, plants, arranging and volunteered with Duke Gardens for 18 years as a docent educator. She was an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church for 38 years where she served as den mother, Sunday School Teacher, various committees but especially enjoyed Lay Shepherd Ministry with her husband Jerry and co-leading Martha Society efforts at the church for 20 years.
Alice was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Larry Mumford.
She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Jerry S. McDaniel; daughter, Susan M. Stahl and her husband, John, of Greensboro; son, Michael S. Mumford and his wife, Courtney, of Durham; five grandchildren, Stephen, Sarah and Stanford Stahl, Caroline and Michael Mumford; sister, Louise W. Sammons and husband, Robert, of Grand Junction, Colo.; brother, Stephen F. Walters Jr. and his wife, Frances, of Greenville; four nieces, their spouses; and great-nephews.
A memorial service in celebration of Alice's life will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall. Private family burial.
