James Clarence "JC" Whitehurst Jr., passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, 510 S. Washington St., Greenville. A private burial at the Ayden Cemetery will precede the memorial service.
He was born in Ayden on Dec. 16, 1928 to James Clarence Whitehurst and Helen McLawhorn Whitehurst. JC married Mary Ann Huffines of Reidsville in 1957.
JC graduated from Ayden High School and Randolph Macon Academy, and earned a degree in agronomy from N.C. State University. In 1951, JC began a career in agribusiness and in 1953, he founded Coastal Chemical Corp (now Coastal AgroBusiness, Inc.), and served as president and CEO until 1997, when his son Jim took over as president and CEO. He continued to serve as Chairman until his death, and was proud of the fact that Coastal is celebrating its 60th year in business in 2013.
A lifelong Methodist, JC was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In 1966, he was appointed to the Regional Board of Wachovia Bank and served until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the Rotary Club and served as the President of the Greenville Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He was an ardent member of the NCSU Wolfpack Club.
JC participated in a number of associations related to agribusiness. He was instrumental in the formation of the Crop Protection Association of NC for which he served as the first president in 1972. He was president of Carolina-Virginia Pesticide Formulation Association in 1964, an organization which evolved into the Southern Crop Production Association, for which he served on the Board of Directors. He served on the board of the National Agricultural Chemical Association, now CropLife America. He also served on the board of the NC Agribusiness Council.
JC will be remembered for his love of family and the people of Coastal, and his passion for his profession and farming operation in Jones and Craven Counties.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Charles McLawhorn "Mac" Whitehurst.
In addition to his wife, JC is survived by his children, Elizabeth Turner and husband, Bill, of Pine Knoll Shores, Helen Kirven and husband, Calvin, of Raleigh, James Clarence "Jim" Whitehurst III and wife, Anne Pennington Whitehurst, of Greenville; a sister, Joyce Whitehurst Stroud of Raleigh; a sister-in-law Olivia Strickland Whitehurst of Ayden; and five grandchildren, Calvin McPhail Kirven Jr., James Caid Kirven, John Clarence Kirven, James Clarence Whitehurst IV, and Elizabeth Anne Whitehurst.
The family will receive family and friends tonight from 6 - 8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home, 2100 E. Fifth St., Greenville.
