Michael Lee Burnette, 67, of Ayden, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013. He was born on March 14, 1945, to the late Robin H. Burnette and Marjorie W. Burnette. He grew up in western North Carolina and lived in Pitt County after discharge from the Army where he served in the Vietnam War. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work from East Carolina University on May 27, 1973. He worked for over 30 years and retired from Century Link.
He is survived by his sons, Matthew Pierce Burnette and Jeremy Shane Burnette of Greenville; two sisters, Robin Ward of Greensboro, Mary Barrett of Raleigh; and many nieces and nephews.
Of all men he was by far the most humble. As a father he was often down to earth and laid back but stern and strong willed as well. Loved by his family, liked by his friends and often making new ones. He was the old timer at the bar who always had a great story for an open ear. Wise and knowledgeable in his ripe age he was a lover of novels and avid reader of murder mystery and science fiction books. As a Vietnam veteran and telecommunications professional for 30 years he was truly a hard working man. May he finally rest in peace.
