Phyllis Roberta (Bartoe) Speakman, 85, died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at home, Risloves Way, Fremont, N.H. surrounded by family and caregivers.

Phyllis Bartoe Speakman was born on Feb. 27, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Willard and Edith (Fritz) Bartoe. She grew up in Hulmeville, Pa. and attended Ohio State University where she married Daniel Earl Speakman on November 17, 1945. In 1958 they were commissioned as missionaries by the United Methodist Church and served in Korea, Taiwan, Algeria, Congo, Bolivia and Chile. During those 14 years, Phyllis co-directed Angels' Haven, an orphanage she helped establish in Seoul, Korea, organized Korean war widows for economical survival, helped establish 4-H groups and a national Girl Scout program in Korea, placed refugees in Kaohsiung, Taiwan housing, taught medical nutrition to a hospital chef in Algeria and laboratory techniques to hospital personnel, was the Port Hostess for the church at the Port of Kinshasa, Congo and educated women in home arts in Bolivia and Chile.
After returning to the United States in 1971, Phyllis moved to Ipswich, Mass. Among the many positions she held were Girl Scout Coordinator/Leadership Trainer, Ipswich Adult Education Director, Peabody Pilgrim House Nursing Home Recreational Therapy Director, Ipswich H&R Block Office Manager and co-owner of Ipswich Crabmeat. She obtained a Masters Degree from Antioch Graduate Center (now Cambridge College), co-owned Human Potential Associates doing counseling and teaching classes in stress management and remotivation and co-owned North Shore Tax Service in Ipswich.
After moving to Greenville in 1997, she continued to be active in the United Methodist Church, particularly assisting with the re-settlement of Bosnian refugees. Phyllis was truly a cosmopolitan woman whose faith in God and love of people was evident in all of her interests and actions.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, JoAnne (Bartoe) and James A. Lewis of Greenville, formally of Ipswich, Mass.. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Earl Speakman; daughters, Victoria (Speakman) and son-in-law, James C. Koshivas of Ipswich, Mass., and Paula Sue (Speakman) Earley of Irving, Texas; siblings Judith (Bartoe) and Robert F. Kohler of Nashville, Tenn. and John-David F. and Donna (Cullen) Bartoe of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was greatly loved and will be missed because she greatly loved all of us, "all the children of the world."
