Stanley Roger "Buddy" Stansell, Ph.D., 78, died peacefully at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice Care House on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. The funeral service will be held at The Memorial Baptist Church Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.

Dr. Stansell was born in 1935 in Jacksonville, Fla., the youngest of three children of George and Rosalie Stansell. He served eight years in the U.S. Naval Reserves and was employed as a draftsman as he worked his way through Florida State University, earning his Bachelors in Science with a major in finance in 1962. He continued his studies at Florida State University, earning his Masters of Business Administration in Finance in 1964 and finally his Ph.D. in finance at the University of Georgia in 1971. After teaching positions at both Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the University of South Carolina, he spent a year with the Farm Credit Administration in Washington, D.C. More interested in academic research, Dr. Stansell moved to the University of Houston's College of Business where he earned tenure. In 1982, he became a professor at the University of Mississippi. Finally, in 1988, he assumed the Robert Dillard Teer Jr., Distinguished Professorship of Business at East Carolina University's College of Business. He retired as professor emeritus in 2005 after a 17 year career at ECU. Professor Stansell is the author of numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and edited books. He enjoyed teaching and mentoring graduate students, remaining actively involved in the careers of many.
Dr. Stansell was an avid reader throughout his life. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening as well as fishing. He and his wife loved to travel, taking trips to Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, and all over the United States. A member of and usher at The Memorial Baptist Church for the last 23 years, he was a member of the Ott Alford Sunday School class where he had many dear friends. He also served with the Food Pantry ministry and the Baptist Men's ramp building ministry.
Dr. Stansell was a loving and caring family man, not only to his parents but also to his wife's parents. He took great pleasure in being involved with his daughter's education and school activities, being a great volunteer for many activities. He also enjoyed adopting his daughter's alma mater's basketball team, the Duke Blue Devils, with many trips to Cameron Indoor Stadium and engaging his quick, dry wit with UNC friends.
Dr. Stansell was preceded in death by his sister Martha "Betty" Stansell Orrell; son-in-law, Garrett Christian Klein; and grandson, Bennett Derby Klein.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 47 years, Patricia Donovan Stansell of Greenville; daughter, Stacy Stansell Gardner, and husband, Matthew, of Nashville, Tenn.; grandson, Andrew Lee Gardner, of Nashville, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Ethel Searcy Donovan of Greenville; brother, George Washington Stansell Jr., and wife, Virgie, of Bell, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home tonight from 6-8.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt expression of thanks to the doctors and nurses who attended to him at Vidant Medical Center and especially at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice House.
