Dee Dee went through public schools in Jacksonville, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School. It was there in her junior year her mother, a nurse, suggested Dee Dee take a class in Chemistry. She was the only girl in a class of about 30 boys, and when it came time for her to be assigned a lab partner, the teacher suggested she team with a senior student who happened to be Floyd Read. The couple got along well; she has been Floyd's partner for 79 years! They were married in 1943.
Later, after five years at the University of Florida, Floyd earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees. They then came to Greenville where Floyd was an Instructor at East Carolina College. After receiving her Bachelor degree at East Carolina College, Dee started a teaching career at J.H. Rose High School. Continuing her studies at East Carolina University, she earned her Masters and continued to teach Biology for 28 years at Rose High.
Ever striving to be a better Educator, Dee Dee was a member of several national professional organizations: The National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, North Carolina Science Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and served on local and state education committees. Dee was a member of First Christian Church in Greenville, and dearly loved her many friends in the church.
Dee Dee loved to travel; she and Floyd made several overseas trips: the Galapagos, Italy, Switzerland, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, England, and Hawaii. There were many trips to National Parks and other wonderful places in the States.
