Mr. Walter Calhoun, 86, passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in Martinsville, Va.

Mr. Calhoun lived his early years in Republic, Pa., and served in the United States Navy for a short time near the end of World War II. After his military service, he received an undergraduate degree in Divinity from Lynchburg College and began pastoring in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). While pastoring he continued his education, receiving a Masters in Divinity from Vanderbilt University, a Masters in History from the University of Nebraska, and began working on a Doctorate in History at the University of Virginia. In 1960, he made his home in Greenville where he taught history at East Carolina University for 30 years, retiring in 1990.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jessamine "Jeppy" Shumate Calhoun; sons, Tom Calhoun of Clayton and John Calhoun and wife, Mary Grace, of Coral Springs, Fla.; daughter, Jann C. Brown and husband, Eugene, of Kinston; grandson, John Chester Calhoun II, of Coral Springs, Fla.; and a brother, James Calhoun and wife, Jackie, of Uniontown, Pa.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
