David Walton, of Eugene, Oregon, died January 9, 2014 of complications of diabetes. He was 47. He had lived with diabetes type 1 since age 20.

David was born to Page Walton and Barbara Sue Hawkins Walton of Santa Clara on September 1, 1966. He was the youngest of their six children. He attended Awbrey Park Elementary School, James Madison Middle School, and North Eugene High School. He grew up in Sts. Thomas and Matthew Episcopal Church on Coburg Road.

After a gap year, David attended the University of Chicago, majoring in History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine. He received his Master's Degree in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

In his youth, David was an accomplished musician. He studied piano and cello, and during his gap year, he enjoyed a short stint as a classical music announcer at KWAX. He had a steady baritone voice and a sensitive ear, and loved many different kinds of music. David read widely, held strong views on politics and social justice, and took part in many lively debates and discussions, online and in person. He had a wry sense of humor and a quick wit.

David worked throughout his schooling, teaching courses, programming, and doing web development. At various times he worked in computer services for MacUniversity, the University of Chicago and University of Notre Dame. After returning to Eugene in 2002, David worked for 9 years in Information Technology at Lane Community College. Most recently, he worked in Information Services at the University of Oregon.

David is survived by his siblings, Eric, of Eugene, Allan, of Seattle, Keith, of Eugene, Stephen, of Portland, and Tracy, of Boston, and their spouses, Sally Walton, Rachael DeBuse, Shawna Gandy, and Susan Mapel. He leaves eleven nieces and nephews: Anne Walton, Katherine Walton, Daniel Walton, Alexander Walton, Adam Walton, Noah Walton, Kiegan DeBuse, James Walton (his godson), Lucie Chang, Henry Chang, and Clara Mapel. Extended family includes Ellen Walton and Stephen Vorhes, also of Eugene.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 10:00AM at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 4110 River Road in Eugene. All are welcome.
