George Whitted, 82, of Eugene, Oregon died 18 April 2014 in a vehicle accident in Nevada. Born 3 May 1931 in Salem, Oregon to Burton and Beatrice Whitted, he attended grade school in Salem and Marshfield High School in Coos Bay.

George joined the U.S. Marine Corps on 28 June 1948, his exemplary military career spanning 30 years until his retirement with the rank of Sergeant Major on 2 February 1978. During his service he was stationed at Camp Pendleton and MCRD in California, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Okinawa, Japan and MCAS, Hawaii. He served in Korea and Viet Nam and received numerous medals, including the elite Air Medal, Silver Star, Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation.

George was active in many Veteran and community service organizations in Oregon and Arizona, giving generously of his time, experience and resources in an effort to improve the lives of others.

George is survived by three sons: Glenn Whitted, Ohio, Gregg Whitted, Oregon and Daniel Whitted, Idaho; two daughters: Larita Berry, Oregon and Lanora Bonasio, Brazil; six grandchildren: Alex Woodley, Alice Bonasio Atkinson, Gillian Allen, Brendan, Erin and Devon Whitted; and three great grandchildren: Natalie Rose, Logan and Roxanna Woodley.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, 19 July 2014 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive Street, Eugene, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, George's family suggests a donation to a veteran's organization of your choice in his memory.
