Donald Stevens Obituary
Donald Charles Stevens, 86, of Loveland passed away on August 3, 2014. Donald was born June 11, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA to Donald R. and Mabel (Ireland) Stevens. He was raised in the Pittsburgh area and graduated from Wilkinsburgh High School. Don attended the University of Pittsburgh for both his undergraduate and graduate work in chemistry. In 1953, in the Heinz Memorial Chapel on the Pitt campus, he married the love of his life, Eleanor Sestrick. Don continued to work at the University for many years as an organic chemist before professional commitments found him moving first to Somerville, NJ, then to Memphis, TN and later to Downers Grove, IL where he became active with the Boy Scouts and the YMCA. After retirement, Don and Eleanor became snowbirds, dividing their time between Sun City West, AZ and Vail, CO. Once grandchildren arrived, Don and Eleanor moved to Loveland, CO to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In addition to spending time with his family (and especially the grandchildren), Don enjoyed hiking, skiing, golf and socializing. In his down time, Don liked to tinker with cars and in later years, computers. He was a handyman in every sense of the word. Don especially enjoyed traveling around the U.S. with Eleanor and visiting every continent except Antarctica. Don is survived by Eleanor, his wife of over 60 years; son John (Kim) Stevens of Boulder; daughters Patricia Stevens of Fort Collins and Jennifer Stevens of Grand Junction; and grandchildren Andrew, Amanda and Noah Stevens. Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Loveland. Contributions in Don's honor can be made to the Special Olympics, Trinity Lutheran Church, or Grand Junction Regional Center Resident Benefit Fund in care of Allnutt Funeral Service. Memorial Service 2:00pm Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loveland. To view the obituary, send condolences and sign the guestbook, go to www.allnutt.com.
