John S."Lope" Loper, 90, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012 at North Shore Skilled Nursing Facility in Loveland, Colo. Lope lived in Loveland and Cheyenne from 1993-2006, then Port Gibson, Miss. prior to moving back to Loveland in 2009. Lope was born on November 9, 1921 in Littleton Colo., to Juan and Maria Cardenas Lopez. Lope grew up in orphan homes in Galveston, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 serving in the South Pacific during WWII. He obtained a Ph.D. in Psychology from Ohio State University in 1955 after attending Southern Methodist University and Louisiana State University. He retired from the VA Hospital in North Little Rock, Ark. in 1983, after working as a clinical psychologist for 27 years. After retirement, Lope worked on his lifelong dream of writing a book, Understanding Human Consciousness, which was published in 2000. Lope is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law - Mike and Pat Loper of Loveland, Colo., and Patrick and Christi Loper of Cheyenne, Wyo.; three grand children - Tracey Loper of Boulder, Colo., Bradley Loper of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jon Loper of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Sister-in-law Margaret Selden of Port Gibson, Miss.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dennis and Elsie Starnes of Pattison, Miss.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lope was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Bernita Starnes Loper, his parents Juan and Maria Lopez, a brother AJ Lopez and a sister Tillie Pridemore. At his family's request memorial donations may be made to Brandywine Methodist Church, 25105 Highway 547, Pattison, Miss. 39144 or Shelton Cemetery 11154 Highway 28, Hazlehurst, Miss. 39083. His family would like to thank the staffs of Pathways Hospice, North Shore Skilled Nursing Facility and The Wexford for their care, support and kindness. Cremation has been conducted and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Port Gibson, Miss.
