Lyman Parkhurst Obituary
Lyman Edward Parkhurst died peacefully at Aspen House on Nov 15th with his family present. Lyman was born on Dec 1, 1937 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Marian and Leslie Parkhurst. After his mother died in 1941, he and his brother, Aaron were raised by their maternal grandparents, John and Matilde Murtaugh. Lyman married Cathy Hennessy March 10, 1955 and joined the U.S. Navy on May 5, 1955 after serving one year in the Marine Corps Reserve. He served honorably for 23 years raising to the ranks of Chief, Warrant Officer, then commissioned and retired as a Lieutenant. Lyman and Cathy raised three children: Rita, John and Lyman Lee. After retiring from the Navy, they bought Maple Terrace Resort in Birchwood, WI on Birch Lake. They sold the resort in 1993, but continued to live in Birchwood until they moved to Loveland, CO in 2000. Both Rita and Lyman lee live in CO. John lives in Kingston, Rhode Island. Lyman was always very proud of his Naval service and that of John and Lyman Lee. Combined, they served over 75 years. Grandchildren Colin and Sarah Parkhurst both served in the U.S. Army. Lyman enjoyed traveling and had always looked on a move as an adventure. He accomplished many things including private pilot, sailboat certification, scout master, and was a recruiting officer for the Naval Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy. Lyman was a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the American Legion, and Trinity United Methodist Church. Lyman is survived by his wife, Cathy of 58 years, daughter Rita Stoffel (Jerry), sons John Edward (Laura) and Lyman Lee. Also surviving are grandchildren Colin Parkhurst, Paul Stoffel, Sarah Atkins, Rachel Mulligan, Ashley Parkhurst, 5 great-grandchildren, brother, Aaron and wife Marlene of Greeley, a cousin Harriet Valliere, a niece and a nephew. Lyman's Memorial Service will be at Trinity United Methodist Church in Loveland on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Memorial Contributions can be made to Elderhaus Adult Day Care (Ft. Collins) or the American Legion at Loveland Associated Veteran's in care of Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S Hwy 287, Fort Collins, CO 80525.
