Michael George Cwik passed away peacefully in his home in Loveland, Colorado on Sunday, February 24, 2013 after a 9 months struggle with lung cancer, which stole his physical health but not his spirited independence. Mike was born to Frederick Cwik and Virginia (Klesta) Cwik on August 19, 1938 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Lane Technical High School in Chicago, IL in 1956 and later pursued undergraduate education at various community colleges. While attending college he began work as a draftsman. Later employment included becoming a taxi driver, Chicago Transit Authority bus driver, cashier on an armored car, and a security guard. He joined the Army National Guard and became a military police officer. In the early 1960s Mike joined the Police Academy shortly followed by joining the Chicago Police Department. During his 28 year tenure with the police department he worked as a street cop, detective, undercover operations, and a dispatcher. On August 14, 1984 he married Mary Kay (Bartley) Cwik whom he dated for a few years prior. He retired from the police department in 1993 and moved to Loveland, CO with Mary Kay and his youngest son Mark, where he became a bus driver for the Thompson School District until 2007. Along with becoming a pilot in his earlier years Mike's hobbies included working on cars/ motorcycles and HO scale train sets, and being a lifetime "car guy" and car collector/enthusiast. He was a member of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) as well as the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Mike is survived by his wife Mary Kay Cwik; his brother Christian Cwik; his sister Marilyn (Marty) Mast; his children Phillip (Susan) Cwik, Mark (Kellie) Cwik, Linda (Greg) Brunet, Darlene (Terry) Taitel, Cathy (Jeff) Flight; his grandchildren Alex Cwik, Jessica Cwik, Brayden Cwik, Chloe Cwik, Kimberly Brunet, Aliisa Brunet, Patti Brunet, Jenna Brunet, Tyler Taitel, Amber Taitel, Parker Taitel, Christy (Andy) Stahl, Lance Flight, Travis Flight, Michael Flight, Tanner Flight, Turner Flight; his great grandchild Kirby Stahl; his step-son Michael Marshall, his step-daughter Chrisy (Craig) Herriges; and step-grandchildren Hayley & Hunter Herriges. Preceded in death by Jeanne Wojtan Dates, and Christine Okowinski. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 8, 2013, 11:00 A.M. at Viegut Funeral Home with a reception following at the Viegut Reception Center. Memorials may be sent to Pathways Hospice or the
