NASHVILLE - Atlee Barringer Gulley, 88, beloved husband, father, and "Pops" passed away May 30, 2013.

Atlee was born on November 21, 1924, in Nashville, North Carolina, the only son of Clifford and Lillie Gulley. After attending Nashville High School and North Carolina State College, he served his country in the Army Air Corps as a pilot on a B-17 in WWII. After the war, he returned home to Nashville where he ran his father's hardware store and started a family with his wife, Myrtle. He continued his military service for 21 years in the Air Force Reserve before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served as Justice of the Peace from 1948 to 1968; Nashville Fire Chief from 1960 to 1975; Licensed Funeral Director from 1964 until his death; member of the American Legion since 1950; member of Nashville Baptist Church since 1932, serving as both deacon and choir member. Atlee was a hero to his country, family, and community.
Atlee never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone he knew. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel special. Everyone who knew him enjoyed listening to his recount of his time in the war. His patriotism ran deep and was appreciated by all who knew him.
Atlee is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle; daughter Cherie Rose and husband David; grandchildren, Michelle Tanner and husband Jimbo, Maria Lambert and husband Tommy, Meredith Sawyer and husband Ken; great-grandchildren, Jack, Eli, and Anna Clayton Tanner, Mackenzie and Caleb Lambert, and Christian, David, and Sarah Dunn Sawyer.
The family welcomes friends and family on Friday, May 31st, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Nashville, NC.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm , Saturday, June 1st, Nashville Baptist Church, Nashville, NC, followed by a graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery, Nashville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nashville Baptist Church, 512 East Washington Street, Nashville, NC.
