Elisha Thomas "Tom" Joyner went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. He was 93. Born in Nash County on January 20, 1920 his mother's birthday, he was the son of the late Lemon Littleton Joyner and Esther Pittman Joyner.
Tom served in the United States Navy in the mid-Atlantic as a Pharmacist's Mate 1st Class during World War II and later returned to Rocky Mount where he worked in the Insurance and Real Estate Industry. The majority of his career was spent with A. Hicks Agency where he worked as a realtor and was a member of the Rocky Mount Board of Realtors.
Tom Joyner was a member of Arlington Baptist Church (formerly known as Arlington Street Baptist) where he served in many areas of ministry including Sunday school teacher, head of deacons, honorary deacon, and choir member. His love of the Lord was manifested in his love for his church and church family.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Dean Joyner. Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Harrison "Mickey" Joyner, of Rocky Mount and a son, Michael Thomas Joyner, of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Virginia Baker, of Swansboro, NC., sister-in-law, Bonnie Strickland, of Rocky Mount and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
Special thanks to niece, Julia Duke, of Rocky Mount whom he loved as a daughter for her compassionate care for her uncle.
Special thanks to his niece, Becky White, of Rocky Mount for her many acts of kindness during his decline.
Tom's life was enriched by his church family at Arlington Baptist Church whom he truly loved and Tom and his family thank the Arlington Church family for the many prayers, visits, cards, meals, and other acts of love that were lifted up for Tom and his family during his declining health. And a special thanks to the Sunday school class, , for their unwavering support, love, and devotion.
During this last year Tom has spent most of his time in declining health in two Rocky Mount nursing facilities. The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Brekenridge Assisted Living where he resided for the last year of his life for the love and wonderful care he received as a resident there. The family also wishes to thank Kindred Care where Tom resided during rehab and his final illness. Their compassionate care during his final illness is much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Arlington Baptist Church, 1500 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Arlington Baptist Church with the Pastor Tim Lowry and Pastor Carlton Cockrell officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Rocky Mount, NC.
Visitation will be held Friday evening, November 15, 2013, from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Cornerstone Funeral Home in Nashville, NC.
