BENNINGTON - Clyde G. Burgess Jr., 84, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 15, 1928, in Bennington, the son of Clyde Sr. and Belle (Briggs) Burgess.

He received his education in the local schools and was a 1948 graduate of Bennington High School, where he was a member of the Ben-Hi football team.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he returned to Bennington following his discharge to join the family business, Burgess Brothers Construction. He was associated with the business for more than 50 years, and served as president for 40 years until his retirement.

He was an avid horseman and trained and drove horses at many racetracks in the area.

He was active in the community for many years, and served for nine years on the Mount Anthony Union School Board.

He was a member of American Legion Post 13, Knights of Columbus Council 307, Bennington Elks Lodge and Bennington Moose Lodge 1233.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Sauer-Gagnon and Penny Burgess, both of Bennington; a granddaughter and four grandsons; his significant other, Ingrid Walker of Bennington; a niece and many cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lorraine Howe.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at 12 noon from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Private committal services will take place at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA & Hospice of Southwestern Vermont Health Care through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
