BENNINGTON - Eugene George Scrivens, 89, resident of Sycamore Lane in Shaftsbury, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, after a brief illness.

He was born July 24, 1924, in Bennington and was the son of the late George W. and Marguerite D. (Therriault) Scrivens. He received his education in local schools and is a graduate of Bennington High School, class of 1943. After high school, he entered the service and proudly served with the 2nd Division U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific. He returned to Bennington after the war. On May 12, 1951, he married the former Lillian Rancourt at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington.

Mr. Scriven had been employed at the former BenMont Paper Co., EZ Mill, Warrin Wire Co. in Pownal and, for many years, at Union-Carbide Co., from which he retired.

He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington and the 2nd Marine Division Life Member.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughter, Linda Jean Scrivens of Winooski; son, Steven E. Scrivens of Bennington; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Matilda Scrivens and Jordan Corey; several nieces and nephews and their families.

He is predeceased by four infant children: George Henry, Rosemary, Anita and Joseph Jude.

A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, June 27, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington.

Interment with military honors will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

There are no calling hours scheduled.
