BENNINGTON - Gerald A. "Jerry" Cornell, 86, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Bennington, the son of Enos M. and Daisy (Rowland) Cornell.

He received his early education in the Woodford schools, and was a 1944 graduate of Bennington High School.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii for two years.

He married the former Marguerite "Peg" Godin at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Jan. 21, 1950. She died March 7, 1999.

He was employed for many years by Prudential Insurance Company, in both the Bennington and Williamstown, Mass., area as an agent and later sales manager, until his retirement in 1975. He then worked in the advertising department at the Bennington Banner until 1989.

He was a former member and past chairman of the Board of Selectman and a charter member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department. He was a member of the Bennington Elks Lodge, Bennington Moose Club, the Hoosick Falls "Polish Club" and was a life member of VFW Post 1938 in Valley Falls, N.Y.

He was a ham radio operator for many years, and his most recent pastime was working with computers.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Armstrong of Buskirk, N.Y., and Jeanne Middlebrook of Greenwich, N.Y.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald and Thomas "Pete" Cornell of Bennington, and John Cornell of Shaftsbury; his companion of many years, Dottie Frost of North Bennington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at 1 p.m. from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Friends may call Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the funeral home, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.
