MIDDLEBURY - Helen S. Cawood, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at East View Terrace in Middlebury.

Born March 1, 1926, in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of Robert P. and Helen (Lennox) Swan.
She graduated in 1947 from Middlebury College with a master's degree in foreign languages.
Mrs. Cawood taught German studies at the University of California in Los Angeles and Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. She also did secretarial work with German correspondence at Swiss Bank in New York and Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
She was a member of the League of Women Voters and Women's Club of Middlebury, Green Mountain Club, Adirondack Mountain Club, Appalachian Mountain Club and Toastmasters.
She enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing, cross-country skiing, bicycling and snowshoeing. She was an avid reader and known as a crossword puzzle expert. She also enjoyed traveling and trips to Baltimore to the Peabody Institute.
Survivors include her husband, W. Gordon Cawood, whom she married Jan. 16, 1954, in Brooklyn, N.Y.; two children, Pamela Rizzo of Wilmington, Del., and Jeffrey Cawood of Foxborough, Mass.; and two grandsons.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the East View Middlebury Community Room with Arthur Cohn, chaplain, officiating.
