RUTLAND CITY - James M. ‘‘Jigger' Howard, 73, of Rutland City, died peacefully surrounded by his family and his pets after a long battle with illness.

Jim was born on August 3, 1940, to Dr. James Harold and Loretta Howard. He grew up in Orwell, Vermont, graduated from Middlebury Union High School and the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.

Jim served his country honorably as a Captain in the Marine Corps, serving in the Vietnam War. In 1968, Jim married the love of his life, Mary, with whom he was married for 46 years. Jim successfully launched his own insurance agency in Rutland, Vermont, JM Howard Insurance in 1975 providing his clients with excellent service for nearly 30 years.

He was active in the Elks, a member of the Rutland Country Club, The MSJ Athletic Association and the American Legion.

Jim was a star athlete in high school playing basketball and baseball. He remained active throughout his life. Jim was an avid lover of golf and a constant follower of professional sports. He was a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees.

He was a regular hunter and fisherman. Jim was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining his friends and family. He was an animal enthusiast who loved his pets.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mary, his daughter Lisa Howard of Rutland, VT and his son Steve Howard of Burlington, VT, as well as his best friends Toshi and Brady, Belly and Button, his brother and sister in law; Robert and Diane Klezun of Plantsville, CT, his sister-in-law Yvonne Beaudet of Hobe Sound, Florida, his Aunt Sylvia Martin of Orwell, VT several cousins, nieces and nephews. Also his special friends Jim and Lucille Coyne of Titusville, FL and Howard and Linda Kelton of East Middlebury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Christ the King Church in Rutland, Vermont on Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 11:00 am.

Friends may call at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland, Monday, April 14, 2014, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
