Porter Ellis Noble, 86, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born May 16, 1927, in Rutland, the son of Robert A. and Irene (Porter) Noble.

He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Force for two years, then graduated from Rutland High School as a member of the Class of 1946, and attended Rutland Junior College. Known for his ski prowess, his picture appeared in the Jan. 27, 1947, issue of Life Magazine with Andrea Mead as they skied at Pico. He then continued his education at the University of Denver, and graduated with a degree in law.

After passing the bar exam, he worked as legal consultant with the Rocky Mountain Research and Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Sun Oil. Then he moved to Washington, D.C., where he was a legal consultant for Sun Oil. His next career move was for many years with the Central Vermont Public Service Corporation as vice president, legal consultant and assistant to the chairman, Albert Cree. Later, he became vice president of law for the Orange Rockland Utilities Corporation in Nyack, N.Y. His last career move was back to Rutland where he practiced real estate law until his retirement.

He married Mary Jeanne Todd Maines in 1951 (deceased). They had four children: Deborah Adele (Smothers) Noble, Todd Ackley Noble, Robinson MacTavish Noble and Winston Giles Porter Noble (deceased).

In 1994, he married Victoria Lee Brothers: they had two children, Porter Ellis Noble Jr., and Charles Amherst Noble. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Bob) A. Noble Jr., and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home, with a service at 5:30 p.m.

Private burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
