PITTSFIELD - Richard "Dick" Harold Fifield, 92, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction.

He was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Pittsfield, the son of Clayton Harold and Hattie Agnes (Potter) Fifield.
He graduated from Rutland High School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in George S. Patten's 3rd Army with the 774th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He earned the Bronze Star Medal and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat on Jan. 15, 1945.
He was employed by the State of Vermont for 25 years as a fish and game warden, and retired in 1975 as a district supervisor for the Forest Service. During his retirement, he served as a deputy sheriff in Rutland County until 1985.
He enjoyed military history and helped to preserve Mount Independence in Orwell. He had an extensive military library and collection that he donated to the Vermont Veterans Military Museum and Library at Camp Johnson. In 2011, Vermont Governor James H. Douglas proclaimed Sept. 10, 2011, as Richard "Dick" Fifield Day. He was also an Honorary Green Mountain Boy.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #765 in Hancock, American Legion Post #31 in Rutland, a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #614, and the Disabled American Veterans of Rutland. He was a member for over 55 years of the Rural Lodge 329 Free and Accepted Masons in Rochester.
Survivors include a son, Larry R. Fifield of Texas; sister, Eleanor Knapp of Rutland; two brothers, John Fifield and Fletcher Fifield, both of Washington state; two step-sons, Neil Belden of Fair Haven, and Scott Belden of Benson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of over 40 years, Joyce Rooker Fifield who died Oct. 9, 2013; a daughter, Sue Brul; a stepson, Donald Belden; a step-grandson, Neil Belden Jr.; a sister, Agnes Bradley and a brother, Kimball Fifield.
Memorial services for both Richard and Joyce Fifield will be held Friday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home.
Private burial will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven.
Arrangements are by the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St., Fair Haven.
