WOODFORD - Richard L. France, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.

Born in Bennington on April 14, 1935, he was the son of Albert A. and Elnora (Knapp) France, and received his education in Woodford and Bennington schools.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving for four years in the submarine fleet.
Mr. France married the former Rayalda Proulx in Bennington on Oct. 21, 1983.
He was a plumber employed by Henry M. Tuttle Co. and Willie Morse and retired as director of maintenance at Crescent Manor Care Center.
He served concurrently as a Bennington County deputy sheriff for 42 years and in the Vermont State Police Auxiliary for 28 years.
Mr. France was a member of Mount Anthony Lodge F&AM, the Shriners, American Legion Post 13, Bennington Elks Lodge 567 and the United States Submarine Veterans.
He enjoyed motorcycle riding, playing golf and camping.
Survivors include his wife: three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his former wife, Ellen Stewart Crawford; four cousins; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert, and a grandson.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Robin Greene officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the funeral home.
Private burial will take place in Woodford Cemetery.
