BENNINGTON - Richard "Dick" Leard Sr., 77, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation.

He was born in Stoneham, Mass., on Nov. 17, 1936, the son of George and Merle (Buxton) Leard.

He served in the Marine Corps and was a Korean veteran.

Mr. Leard was employed with Globe Union Co. and worked for Globe Union/Johnson Controls for 30 years until the plants closed in 1994, during which time he was president of the Union for about 10 years.

He was a member of Bennington Elks Lodge #567 and American Legion Post 13.

He was an avid hunter, played softball and enjoyed playing golf and doing puzzles. He was also an avid Red Sox, Bruins and Giants fan.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne (Herra) Leard, whom he married Jan. 17, 1959, a son, Richard "Rick" Leard Jr., and a daughter, Valerie Clark, all of Bennington; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Leard of Oklahoma and Bernie Leard of New Hampshire, and a sister, Clare Costa of Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Leard was predeceased by a son, Wayne Leard, in 2003.

The prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, where friends may call from 3 p.m. prior to the service, and followed by a reception at American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.
