WHITEHALL, N.Y. - Robert John Murphy, 71, of Whitehall, and a former resident of Fair Haven, Vt., died Jan. 22, 2014, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 13, 1942, in Whitehall, the son of Robert and Anna (Laporte) Murphy.
He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1967, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, prior to his honorable discharge.
He was a member of the Fair Haven Eagles Club #3907, the American Legion Post #83 in Whitehall and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1653 in Granville.
He worked as a cook for many years in the Fair Haven and Castleton area.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Rita Tyrell; six sisters, Helen Roy of East Hartford, Conn., Theresa Gay Murphy of Fair Haven, Vt., Sandra Wright of Poultney, Vt., Elaine Phillips of Hampton, Shirley Bowen of Benson, Vt., and Carol Ainsworth of Bomoseen, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father in 1972, his mother in 1990, and a brother, Rae F. Murphy in 1994.
There will be no calling hours.
A luncheon and fellowship will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the home of John Spafford, Route 4A in Bomoseen, Vt.
