Ronald Sherwin Horton Sr., 77, of Rutland died Tuesday morning, May 21, 2013, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington.

He was born in Rutland, Vermont, on January 1, 1936, the son of Frances (Young) Horton Kapitan and Roy Horton.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1954.

Ron was employed at Rutland News, Rutland Auto and the Rutland City Fire Department from 1971 to 1999, when he retired. Ron was very proud to be part of this department.

Ron was one of the Rutland High School's star athletes and he also enjoyed playing golf, which he did extremely well, winning many tournaments.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Wood) Horton whom he married on December 28, 1957; his children, Ronald S. Horton Jr. of New Boston, N.H., Darlene (Horton) Colvin of New Market, N.H., and Kimberly (Horton) Silver of Rutland; his sister Nancy (Horton) Burgess and her husband Howard of Center Rutland; his stepmother Marie (Mollie) Horton of Granville, N.Y.; grandchildren, Ronald David Horton and his wife Brandi of Abbeville, MS, Christopher and Tiffany Horton, both of Rutland, Jackie Colvin, Frances Colvin and Daniel Colvin, all of Portsmouth, N.H., and Ashley and Tommy Silver of Lowell, MA; great-grandchildren, Taylor Colvin of Portsmouth, N.H., and Carly Horton of Abbeville, MS; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and a son-in-law, Jack Colvin.

Funeral services with Fireman's Honors will be held Friday, May 24, 2013, at 1 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
