Adeline Bernice De Croo Thurmond
Died Sep 12, 2013 after a short illness, through which she always maintained a cheerful, optimistic outlook. Adeline is survived by her children (Linda & husband Jim Smith of NC, Valerie Thurmond & husband Tom Mroz of MD, and Lee Thurmond of CA), grand- children (Nolan & wife Kristen Smith, and Daina Smith of NC), and a great-granddaughter (Olivia Smith of NC). She will also be greatly missed by her best friend Kathryn Howard of PA.
Adeline was born May 3, 1924 in Jenny Lind AR, moved to Redlands CA at age 4. While attending the University of Redlands, she met Stafford "Joe" Thurmond at a USO dance and they married in 1943. Adeline transferred to UCLA to study Medical Technology, and Joe joined her at UCLA while he continued to play tenor sax in jazz bands. After graduation, Adeline began work at Santa Monica Hospital as a Med Tech and Joe began a career in Cadillac sales. Adeline devoted herself to her family, the PTA, the Girl Scouts, and her church. The family relocated to San Bernardino in 1968, after which Adeline went back to work as a Med Tech where she loved her work until retirement. During that time, Adeline's life partner Joe died in 1977, but she carried on with dignity.
Adeline's interest in education led her to work as a docent at the San Bernardino County Museum where she gave regular presentations to school groups and other visitors. Adeline joined the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Red Cross, Easter Seals, and the Audubon Society. In lieu of flowers, donations to the County Museum (http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/museum/membership/sbcma.htm) or her other charity interests may be made in her name. In honor of her love of the Museum, family and friends are invited to join our memorial gathering at the SB County Museum on Saturday, Oct 12, 2013 at 2pm in the back garden.
