Merle M. Broderick
Passed away on February 19 in Port Angeles, Washington.
Born Merle Lee Margaret Marchand on March 23, 1936 in Oakland, California, the daughter of California J. Angotti and William J. Marchand, Merle grew up in Crockett, California. She attended San Jose State University from 1953-1957 and was a member of Sigma Kappa National Sorority. After graduation she pursued graduate studies there and at UC Riverside, the University of Redlands, and Cal State University at San Bernardino.
Merle taught school for 40 years and was a much loved teacher at Rim of the World School District, Lake Arrowhead, California.
After her divorce in 1975 she married Cornelius Anthony Broderick with whom she spent many wonderful and happy years until he suddenly passed away. She later married Gary Lew Smeltzer and they moved to Port Angeles in 1977 following her retirement.
She was active in the Port Angeles community, giving freely of her time. She was a member of the Garden Club, Newcomers Club, St Vincent De Paul, AARP of PA (board member) Serenity House Soroptimist (Jet Set), Sons of Italy, Naval Emblem Club #490 (Past President), Naval
#353, Port Angeles Fine Arts Center and Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
Merle is survived by her step-son Tim Broderick.
Services were held in Port Angeles on February 27th and Merle will be inurned at Riverside National Cemetery with Cornelius Anthony Broderick.
