William R. Coleman Obituary
William R. Coleman
August 29, 1916 - June 19, 2014
Born in Newport, Rhode Island to Frank and Mae Cohen, Bill left home at the age of 17 to spend the next 10 years traveling the country and world. Proud of San Bernardino, he opened his optometry practice on "E" Street, across from what is now the Norman Feldheim Library, in the early 1950's. He established himself as a civic fixture giving back to the community in all manners and ways. Multiple generations of San Bernardino residents were the beneficiaries of his care. Collecting manuscripts developed into a scholarly interest in American history, leading him to research and publish articles on significant pieces of his collection. Chairing the San Bernardino Bicentennial Commission in 1976 allowed him to share this love of his city and country with others. A stint in the Merchant Marines before WWII, then serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the Philippines during that war broadened his interest in all peoples and cultures. With his wife, Monique, they continued these travels throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, sons Philippe (Susie), and Kevin (Lori), and daughter Tina-Lise (David), and seven grandchildren. Bill's greatest joy in life was his family. His was a long life, well lived and he will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 12:00 .pm at Congregation Temple Emanu El, 1495 Ford Street, Redlands, CA.
