Ed Gaetz, 87, died on Thursday, July 25, 2013 in Jasper, Florida.
Ed was born on September 20, 1925 in New York City. He retired in 1973 from the United States Navy after thirty years of military service. Ed served in World War II, the Korean Era and Vietnam War. At the time of his retirement from the Navy, he was Commanding Officer of the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia.
In 1973, Ed moved to Warner Robins to serve as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Georgia College and State University programs at the Robins Resident Center. He retired in 1987.
Ed was a Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He had served as Vice President and President of the Church Council, the first president of the Warner Robins Tennis Association and was co-founder of the Warner Robins SOUSE group. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Dorothy Gaetz; his sister, Bride Feighny; his first wife, Vi Gaetz; and brother-in-law, Larry Adams.
Survivors include his wife, Clara C. Gaetz of Warner Robins, Georgia; children, Tim Gaetz of Columbus, Georgia, and Cathy Knowles and Lori Willis of Warner Robins, Georgia; stepchildren, Terry Rodgers (Jim) of Thomson, Georgia and Gary Merrow (Karen) of Dacula, Georgia; sister, Peggy Adams of Potomac, Maryland; grandchildren, Ricky Knowles (Chrissy), Danny Newman, Andy Gaetz, Scotty Gaetz, Steven Gaetz, and Emily Riggins; step-grandchildren, Ty Merrow, Noah Merrow, Ethan Merrow and Caleb Merrow; great-grandchildren, Brooke Knowles, Tanner Knowles, Teagan Gaetz, Walker Daniel Newman, Mya Jade Gaetz, and Rhea Jalynn Gaetz; and several nieces and nephews.
A Rosary Service will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. with visitation following until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with a Committal Service following in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, Georgia. Monsignor Fred Nijem, Father Steve Adams and Deacon Jim Hunt will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that donations be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, 251 S. Davis Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
