Edward Medeck Obituary
Edward Medeck, 87

St. Cloud, Minnesota

Sept. 22, 1926 ~ Feb. 17, 2014

Edward Medeck, age 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, surrounded by his loving family, passed peacefully from this life into God's warm embrace on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House.

A lifetime resident of the St. Cloud/Waite Park area, Ed touched many lives with his infectious personality. He was born September 22, 1926 in Waite Park. At age 17, Ed joined the Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Drew as a signalman during World War II, traveling over 76,000 miles. He returned to graduate from St. Cloud Technical High School. After high school he worked at the VA Hospital where he met the love of his life, Anita Lauer. They married on May 25, 1950 at St. Mary's Cathedral in St. Cloud. Their devotion to each other during their 57 year marriage was an example of true love for all who knew them. Ed's greatest pride and joy was his family. He was totally devoted to his wife and children. He was a one-in-a-million father—supportive of all his children and so proud of each grandchild. He had that twinkle in his eye that told you he was excited to see you and had a real way of making you feel safe and loved. Ed was a very affectionate man—he gave "I love you's" very freely and his bear hugs were legendary. He was a gentle caregiver, and took such tender care of Anita during her illness. A self-taught carpenter, electrician, and plumber, Ed was involved in many remodeling projects and patiently passed his knowledge on to his sons-in-law. Following a thirty plus year career at the VA Medical Center he was very fortunate to have enjoyed thirty years of retirement. During this time, Ed traveled extensively with his family and helped out wherever needed. Ed will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren, family and friends. Those who knew him always commented on what a sweet man he was.

Ed was a member of the Waite Park American Legion, the St. Cloud VFW, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, as well as a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Waite Park.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife Anita in 2007, parents John and Marie Medeck, brothers Donald, John, and Raymond, and step-mother Katie Miller. Ed is survived by his five children Dave (Marie) Medeck, Arnold, Maryland; Lee Ann (Dave ) Kunkel, Clearwater; Lynne (Tom) Harris, Vadnais Heights; Lori (Dean) Bernick, St. Cloud; Lisa (Paul) Steffens, Shorewood; nine grandchildren Matt (Lyndsay) Kunkel, Bethany Kunkel, Brian Kunkel, Leah Bernick, Tara Bernick-Cronin (Erik), Danielle Steffens, Lindsey Harris, Cole Steffens, Elizabeth Steffens, and one great-grandchild Benjamin Edward Kunkel; brother Milton (Barb) Medeck, and sister-in-law Ernestine Medeck.

Thank you family and friends and all those who cared so tenderly for Ed--the staff at Coborn's Cancer Center, St. Cloud Hospital Oncology Unit, St. Cloud Hospital Palliative Care, St. Cloud Hospital Home Care and Hospice Services, Father Mark Innocenti and Quiet Oaks Hospice House. It has meant so much to all of us.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial contributions be directed to Quiet Oaks Hospice House and the St. Cloud Hospital Home Care & Hospice Services.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2014 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waite Park. Entombment with military honors will be at Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum, St. Cloud following mass. Visitation at Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud on Thursday from 4-8 PM (parish prayers at 6 PM) and after 9 AM on Friday at the funeral home.
