The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict's Monastery, St. Joseph, for Sister Elizabeth (Donald) Gruenes, who died, age 80, on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at St. Benedict Senior Center, St. Cloud, Minn. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, from 1-6 p.m. or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict's Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

S. Elizabeth Gruenes was born July 29, 1933, to John and Olive (Dockendorf) Gruenes. She was raised in Eden Valley, Minn., where she attended Assumption Grade School and Eden Valley Public High School. Answering God's call to monastic life, she entered Saint Benedict's Monastery on September 12, 1956; was received into the novitiate as Sister Donald in June 1957; made first monastic profession on July 11, 1958; and perpetual monastic profession on July 11, 1961. Her Golden Jubilee, which she celebrated in 2008, was a joyful occasion.

A graduate of the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, S. Elizabeth received a B.A. degree in music with a minor in philosophy. She continued her music education, including earning an M.M.E. in music education and piano from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. Later, she earned a second master's degree, this time a M.A. in pastoral ministry, from Seattle University, Seattle, Wash.

S. Elizabeth served in elementary education and in music at St. Augustine's and St. Anthony's in St. Cloud, as well as in Gilman, Minn., and in Sauk Centre, Minn. For many years, S. Elizabeth was involved in parish ministry. She served in cluster parishes in the New Ulm Diocese: Lafayette and Swan Lake; Lake Benton and Tyler as Director of Religious Education/parish worker; Redwood Falls in several positions, including parish liturgist and parish worker; Silver Lake as a pastoral associate working in parish ministry including CCD and RCIA; and at Glencoe in music and liturgy as Coordinator of Church Community.  

S. Elizabeth is survived by her Benedictine community and one sister, Christine Gruenes Maul. She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Memorial gifts should be directed to Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict Retirement Fund.
