Anthony Catena Obituary
Anthony (Tony) Catena

On June 7, 2014, Tony Catena, 73, died peacefully at home, embraced by family and friends. He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 48 years; brothers Patrick (Arlene), Richard and Donald; sisters-in-law Cynthia Mitchell and Michaela Karni (Shlomo); brother-in-law Joe Jordan (Marjorie); and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pasquale and Julia Ciorciari Catena.

Born April 24, 1941, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Tony completed doctoral and postdoctoral work at the University of Illinois and the University of Minnesota in 1971. He and Nancy then moved to San Francisco, where Tony commenced a fulfilling 30-year career as a professor of microbiology at San Francisco State University.

He was a highly esteemed source of advice and help for family and friends. For example, he loved to know how things worked and as a result had an extensive collection of tools-common and obscure, large and small, vintage and modern-which made him the go-to guy when friends and family needed help with projects of many sorts. He loved to travel, and he also happily shared with friends the expertise he acquired by planning the elaborate trips that he and Nancy enjoyed over the years.
He will be deeply missed and remembered for his dry wit, his unfailing patience, his kindness, and an extraordinary generosity of spirit.
Private services will be held at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders or the Marin-SF Food Bank.
