Carl M. Olsen Sr.

Carl Olsen passed away peacefully on May 7, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Carl had fought hard to recover from a recent illness, and was home and on the mend when stricken suddenly. He was 93. Carl was the loving husband of Evelyn and loving father of Carl Jr, who both pre-deceased him. He is survived by his adoring children Catherine and Paul, Paul's partner Mark, and Carl's special friend of many years, Sylvia Morden. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews too numerous to list, but in whose lives he shared a special place.

Carl was a San Francisco native, and lived here his entire life. He attended the High School of Commerce, where he was All-City in Soccer, and USF. The child of Danish immigrants, Carl grew up in Eureka Valley, blocks from his father's restaurant, until his father and uncles built a house in the Parkside district and his family moved there.

Carl worked in San Francisco's City Hall for 35 years, and met his wife, Evelyn there. She worked in the Assessor's office, but had been deputized in order to accompany sequestered jurors to lunch. When they married in 1949, they were written up as the first Deputy Sheriffs to marry in the State of California. Carl retired as Chief Deputy Sheriff of San Francisco in order to become County Clerk, the position he held until retiring 30 years ago.

Carl was a member of the Olympic Club, a Native Son of the Golden West, and a founding member of St Stephen's parish, where he was active until very recently. He was proud to be a member of the VFW, having served in the Fifth Armored Division in WWII. Attending their reunions was an annual highlight up until a few years ago. He was also very active as a SIR for many years.

Carl lived a very full life, independent and active until his illness earlier this year. He had a mind like a steel trap, and his advice on civil codes was requested for years after his retirement. For many years, well into his 80's, he played golf every week. His score was never the best, but the camaraderie of his friends was. His many awards, proclamations and certificates of honor are on display in his den.

Carl's contributions to this world were many, and we will all miss him beyond words. However, we have no doubt he is already busy making his mark in heaven.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 18th at 10am, at St Stephen's Church, 451 Eucalyptus Drive, San Francisco (parking behind the church near Stonestown Cinema). No flowers, please. Donations may be made to St Ignatius College Prep, 2001 37th Ave, SF, CA 94116, memo IMO Carl Olsen; or to UCSF Foundation, Box 45339, SF, CA 94145-0339, memo Palliative Care - IMO Carl Olsen.
